La temporada de Los Guerreros, The Warriors, equipo de fútbol masculino de la Universidad Internacional Webber, Webber International University (WIU), se estrenó en su campo con una victoria por 3-1 sobre el de Trinity Baptist College (TBC) de Jacksonville.

En este encuentro tuvo un protagonismo importante Nikita Muniz, al marcar el tercer gol en un momento crítico en el que Los Guerreros ganaban por dos goles a uno. Nikita entró al campo en el segundo tiempo y marcó el 3 a 1 en el minuto 71 para incrementar el resultado y resolver satisfactoriamente el partido, a pase de Mateo Fernandez Sassoni.

La temporada arrancó para los Warriors el sábado, 27 de agosto, en un partido contra Pensacola Christian College (PCC) al que derrotaron por dos goles a cero. Los dos próximos partidos, una vez reanudada la liga después del parón producido como consecuencia de la irrupción del huracán Dorian, tendrán lugar fuera de casa, ambos en el Estado de Alabama. El primero, el próximo lunes, 9 de setiembre, en el campo del Auburn University (AU), Auburn, a las 7 pm hora local y, el segundo en las instalaciones de Faulkner University, Montgomery, a la 1.30 pm (7 am hora española).

Men’s soccer wins 2019 home opener over TBC

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 7, 2019) – The Webber International University men’s soccer team defeated Trinity Baptist College 3-1 in its 2019 home opener on Saturday at Warrior Field. The win moved Webber to 2-0 on the young season.

Junior David Negrin Ruiz found the back of the net for the third time in two matches so far this year, scoring less than 16 minutes in on a quick cross from sophomore Elies Sebbouh to get the scoring started. It was Sebbouh’s first career assist.

Webber then added another first-half goal by senior Matheus Gomes in the 31st minute on a header into the lower 90, assisted by sophomore Mateo Fernandez Sassoni. It was Gomes’ first career goal.

Then, after a quick goal by Trinity Baptist less than a minute into the second half, Webber increased its advantage back to two with Fernandez Sassoni’s second assist of the match, resulting in a goal by freshman Nikita Muniz to the upper 90 in the 71st minute.

The two assists by Fernandez Sassoni matched the same number of assists he dished out last season as a freshman.

In all, Webber outshot Trinity Baptist 19-8 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal, and outshot the Eagles 11-3 in just the first half alone.

Gomes and freshman Rodrigo Flores Iraheta led the Warriors with four total shot attempts each while Negrin Ruiz fired all three of his attempts on target.

In the goal, freshman Felipe Freiria recorded the first-half shutout and has yet to allow a goal so far in his two starts to kick off the 2019 season. Freiria improved to 2-0 and recorded two saves for the second match in a row.

Webber’s Head Men’s Soccer Coach Neil Cockburn said, «Today was a good win for our program considering we have only had two days of practice since coming back from the hurricane. Overall, I am pleased with what I saw, and I am looking forward to seeing how we can continue to progress.»

Next week, Webber will play back-to-back road matches in Montgomery, Alabama, starting with a match under the lights against Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 9, before the Warriors battle Faulkner University (Ala.) at 1 p.m. two days later on Wednesday, September 11. Webber will then return home a week later on Wednesday, September 18, to host Crooke Lake rival Warner University at 4 p.m.
